YOUR WEEKLY ROUNDUP May 15 - May 21, 2025

In the Evening We Shall be examined on love,

And it won’t be multiple choice,
though some of us would prefer it that way.
Neither will it be essay, which tempts us to run on
when we should be sticking to the point, if not together.
In the evening there shall be implications
our fear will change to complications. No cheating,
we’ll be told, and we’ll try to figure out the cost of being true
to ourselves. In the evening when the sky has turned
that certain blue, blue of exam books, blue of no more
daily evasions, we shall climb the hill as the light empties
and park our tired bodies on a bench above the city
and try to fill in the blanks. And we won’t be tested
like defendants on trial, cross-examined
till one of us breaks down, guilty as charged. No,
in the evening, after the day has refused to testify,
we shall be examined on love like students
who don’t even recall signing up for the course
and now must take their orals, forced to speak for once
from the heart and not off the top of their heads.
And when the evening is over and it’s late,
the student body asleep, even the great teachers
retired for the night, we shall stay up
and run back over the questions, each in our own way:
what’s true, what’s false, what unknown quantity
will balance the equation, what it would mean years from now
to look back and know

Children in the Teaching our Neighbors (ToN) program have worked to fill a role as teachers, themselves, for children in A Children’s Place (ACP). Through reading and through music, ToN children have reached out to their young neighbors upstairs at 1st Pres.

IT'S SPRING!!!

While you're getting ready for warm weather, know that our Spring/Summer Rummage Sale will take place on Saturday, June 7th from 9 am to 4 pm in SM Fellowship Hall.  We'll want clean summer tops, pants, shorts, jackets, etc along with household items, kitchenware, outdoor and indoor games, lots of kid's clothes and toys, small appliances and pretty much anything else except really heavy items that can't be carried by one person. 

Please, NO ELECTRONICS, NO CAR SEATS (it's illegal for us to sell them) and NO CHRISTMAS ITEMS OR WINTER CLOTHES. 

You can leave donations inside the 6th Street door from April 1st through June 5th or, if you have time, you could really help us by leaving your things in the meeting room off Fellowship Hall. As always, we'll welcome anyone who wants to help set up on June 6th anytime from 9 am until we finish or who wants to help at the sale on the 7th anytime from 8:45 am - 4 pm.  If you want to help one or both days please let Joanne Nelson know. 

In anticipation of your help and donations for this "priced to sell" sale that has helped our neighbors and hundreds of others over the years, thank you very much!

This year’s common read is My Side of the River by Elizabeth Camarillo Gutierrez.

Register here for group discussions happening throughout the county between May 12-23, 2025. Then, plan to participate in “Chautauqua County Day”, a free admission day at Chautauqua Institution on Thursday, July 17 when the author will speak at the 3:30 lecture in the Hall of Philosophy.

YWCA of Jamestown and Chautauqua Institution are serving as lead organizations for this initiative. First Presbyterian Church is pleased to be a partnering organization for this year’s Book Read.

The Presbytery of Western New York and the Presbyterian Church (USA) requests per capita dues each year. Per capita is the amount of money per member that our congregation pays to the larger Presbyterian Church (USA). These payments help to support the connection and collaboration between Presbyterian churches in our presbytery and across the country, as well as contribute to the global mission of God. 

We hope you will consider contributing the per capita apportionment cost of $40 for yourself and each communicant member of your family.
